Finite Element Analysis of Thin-Walled Structures
By J. W. Bull

* Publisher: Spon Press
* Number Of Pages: 264
* Publication Date: 1990-12-31
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1851661360
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781851661367

Description
Although this book is neither a comprehensive text nor a complete handbook on finite element (FE) analysis, the book would be a definite asset to practicing engineers involved with analysis and design of thin-walled structures. The book can also be a valuable reference to graduate and undergraduate students in their first course on FE analysis. Anyone who is venturing into practical use of the FE method can find useful reading in this book.
In one chapter, the structure of FE computer programs including many tips on program developments and problems which can be encountered in modifying existing programs are given. The chapter also provides guidance on how to select a FE software package, steps in familiarization with programs, and warnings against misuses. List of commercially available FE programs is given, indicating their capabilities and limitations. Another chapter emphasizes errors that can occur. It also shows that elements have limitations and may not give accurate results for all applications. User confidence should be established by testing. Patch and single element tests are described. Inaccuracies related to element aspect ratios and element distortions and mesh idealization of structures are discussed. The chapter also include a demonstration of ill-conditioned equations that can occur. Chapter 4 gives derivation of one-, two-, and three-dimensional elements. Formulation of geometric stiffness matrices is also included. Chapters 1 and 4 can serve as good introduction to the FE analysis.
A good presentation of FE analysis of axisymmetric thin shells, including discussion of material and geometric nonlinearities, can be found in Chap. 5. The last two chapters discuss use of FE analysis in the design of steel structures for ships and offshore platforms. The structural components in these are mainly in the form of thin plates with extensive stiffeners or in the form of thinwalled tubular members. The finite element idealizations for analyses of the response of the structure as a whole or of local portion are discussed with examples from practice. Although the book is written by eight authors it treats well one theme. The readers will not be inconvenienced by the lack of coordination frequently encountered when a book is written by such number of authors.

Modeling soil liquefaction hazards for performance-based earthquake engineering (Report)
By Steven L Kramer

* Publisher: Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center
* Number Of Pages:
* Publication Date: 2002
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: B0006RWYCY
* ISBN-13 / EAN:

ABSTRACT
The first widespread observations of damage attributed to liquefaction were made in the 1964 Niigata, Japan, and 1964 Alaska earthquakes. In numerous earthquakes since, liquefaction has been deemed responsible for significant damage to buildings and bridges. Liquefaction has been studied extensively over the past 35 years, and substantial advances have been made in understanding the development and effects of this phenomenon. These advances have led to a series of practical procedures for evaluating the potential for occurrence and for estimating its effects. These procedures, however, are almost entirely empirical in nature and, as such, are difficult to apply to the problem of performance prediction for individual structures.
The Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center is committed to the development of methods and procedures for performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE).
The use of PBEE requires the ability to predict a nearly continuous spectrum of performance states for individual structures. This requirement implies the need for tools and procedures for evaluation of the entire process of liquefaction — from initiation to effects. Recent advances in the understanding of liquefaction-related phenomena offer the promise of improved analytical predictions of the initiation and effects of soil liquefaction. The purpose of this synthesis report is to summarize current procedures for practical prediction of liquefaction behavior, to describe recent advances in the understanding of liquefaction behavior, and to describe the incorporation of this improved understanding into new solutions for detailed modeling of soil liquefaction. The focus of this report, however, is on performance, and the reader should expect that aspects of liquefaction that relate to the performance of buildings, bridges, and lifelines will be emphasized.
Well-known and widely used empirical tools and procedures for evaluation of liquefaction hazards will be reviewed relatively briefly, with more detailed discussions devoted to emerging knowledge about the mechanics of liquefiable soil behavior, and methods for incorporating those mechanics into improved models for performance prediction.

Tropical Residual Soils Engineering
By Bujang B.K. Huat, Gue See Sew, Faisal Haji Ali

* Publisher: Taylor & Francis
* Number Of Pages: 260
* Publication Date: 2004-06-15
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 9058096602
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9789058096609

Product Description:

Residual soils are found in many parts of the world. They are formed when rock weathering is faster than transport processes by water, gravity and wind. As an effect, much of the soils formed remain at the place of formation and many of the characteristics of the parent rock are retained. In tropical regions, residual soil layers can be very thick, sometimes extending for hundreds of meters before reaching un-weathered rock. Tropical Residual Soils Engineering forms a unique work with regard to other books on soil mechanics and soil engineering as it is entirely devoted to soils in tropical areas. Subjects treated are the origin, testing, and properties of tropical residual soils; application and stabilization of tropical residual soils; slope, slope assessment, and stabilization; development guidelines; and geoenvironmental aspects and development of a spatial database. The technical content is illustrated by a case study. Tropical Residual Soils Engineering is authored by experts that have gained extensive experience with this type of soil. This state-of-the art matter is intended for graduate students, researchers and professionals in soil & rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering working in tropical regions.

EARTHQUAKE GEOTECHNICAL (V1) ENGINEERING (Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering)
By Ishihara

* Publisher: Taylor & Francis
* Number Of Pages: 667
* Publication Date: 1995-01-01
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 9054105798
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9789054105794
* Binding: Hardcover

This book is no doubt a nice book but make a correction here that this is NOT Earthquake Geotechnical (V1) Engineering by Ishihara. The book I'm mentioning have ISBN: 9054105798 while this book has ISBN: 9058091171 and edited by: Pedro S. Seco e Pinto. This is basically the compilation of the papers from the Second International conference on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering/Lisboa/Portugal/21-25 June 1999. Earthquake Geotechnical (V1) Engineering by Ishihara is actually a book not conference papers.

Product Description:

Hardbound. The subject of geomaterial interfaces recognizes the important influences of the interface behaviour on the performance of interfaces involving cementaceous materials such as concrete and steel, ice-structure interfaces, concrete-rock interfaces and interfaces encountered in soil reinforcement. During the past two decades, the subject of geomaterial interfaces has attracted the concerted attention of scientists and engineers both in geomechanics and applied mechanics. These efforts have been largely due to the observation that the conventional idealizations of the behaviour of interfaces between materials by frictionless contact, bonded contact, Coulomb friction or finite friction tend to omit many interesting and important influences of special relevance to geomaterials. The significant manner in which non-linear effects, dilatancy, contact degradation, hardening and softening, etc., can influence the behaviour of the interface is borne out by

There is a departure from empiricism, with emphasis on collection of hydrological data, processing and analysis of data, and hydrological design on sound principles and matured judgment.

Large number of hydrological design problems are worked out at the end of each article, to illustrate the principles involved and the design procedure. Problems for assignment are given at the end of each chapter, along with objective type and intelligence questions.

Product Description:

Although the use of composites has increased in many industrial, commercial, medical, and defense applications, there is a lack of technical literature that examines composites in conjunction with concrete construction. Fulfilling the need for a comprehensive, explicit guide, Reinforced Concrete Design with FRP Composites presents specific information necessary for designing concrete structures with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites as a substitute for steel reinforcement and for using FRP fabrics to strengthen concrete members. In a reader-friendly, design-oriented manner, this book discusses the analysis, design, durability, and serviceability of concrete members reinforced with FRP. The authors first introduce the elements that constitute composites-the structural constituent and matrix-and discuss how composites are manufactured. Following an examination of the durability of FRP composites that contain fibers, such as glass, carbon, or aramid, the book illustrates how FRP external reinforcement systems (FRP-ER) can be used for enhancing the strength and stiffness of concrete structures using theory and design principles. The concluding chapter concentrates on serviceability aspects of concrete members internally reinforced with FRP. An excellent resource of design and construction practices, Reinforced Concrete Design with FRP Composites is a state-of-the-art reference on concrete members reinforced with FRP.

Composites for Construction: Structural Design with FRP Materials
By Lawrence C. Bank

* Publisher: Wiley
* Number Of Pages: 560
* Publication Date: 2006-07-21
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0471681261
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780471681267

Product Description:

The first textbook on the design of FRP for structural engineering applications

Composites for Construction is a one-of-a-kind guide to understanding fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) and designing and retrofitting structures with FRP. Written and organized like traditional textbooks on steel, concrete, and wood design, it demystifies FRP composites and demonstrates how both new and retrofit construction projects can especially benefit from these materials, such as offshore and waterfront structures, bridges, parking garages, cooling towers, and industrial buildings.

The code-based design guidelines featured in this book allow for demonstrated applications to immediately be implemented in the real world. Covered codes and design guidelines include ACI 440, ASCE Structural Plastics Design Manual, EUROCOMP Design Code, AASHTO Specifications, and manufacturer-published design guides. Procedures are provided to the structural designer on how to use this combination of code-like documents to design with FRP profiles.

In four convenient sections, Composites for Construction covers:
* An introduction to FRP applications, products and properties, and to the methods of obtaining the characteristic properties of FRP materials for use in structural design
* The design of concrete structural members reinforced with FRP reinforcing bars
* Design of FRP strengthening systems such as strips, sheets, and fabrics for upgrading the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structural members
* The design of trusses and frames made entirely of FRP structural profiles produced by the pultrusion process

Summary: Excellent for learning and designing!
Rating: 5

This book is a great help if you are learning or designing with FRP composites. It's probably the best book I've bought in the subject. I strongly recommend it.

FRP Composites for Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete Structures: a guide to fundamentals and design for repair and retrofit (Structural Engineering: Mechanics and Design)
By Peruma Balaguru

* Publisher: Taylor & Francis
* Number Of Pages: 336
* Publication Date: 2008-11-14
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0415448549
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780415448543
* Binding: Hardcover

Product Description:

High strength fibre composites (FRPs) have been used with civil structures since the 1980s, mostly in the repair, strengthening and retrofitting of concrete structures. This has attracted considerable research, and the industry has expanded exponentially in the last decade. Design guidelines have been developed by professional organizations in a number of countries including USA, Japan, Europe and China. Until now designers have had no publication which provides practical guidance or accessible coverage of the fundamentals. This book fills this void. It deals with the fundamentals of composites, and basic design principles, and provides step-by-step guidelines for design. Its main theme is the repair and retrofit of un-reinforced, reinforced and prestressed concrete structures using carbon, glass and other high strength fibre composites. In the case of beams, the focus is on their strengthening for flexure and shear or their stiffening.The main interest with columns is the improvement of their ductility; and both strengthening and ductility improvement of un-reinforced structures are covered. Methods for evaluating the strengthened structures are presented. Step by step procedures are set out, including flow charts, for the various structural components, and design examples and practice problems are used to illustrate. As infrastructures ages worldwide, and its demolition and replacement becomes less of an option, the need for repair and retrofit of existing facilities will increase. Besides its audience of design professionals, this book will suit graduate and advanced undergraduate students. It will also serve as a basic guide for researchers.
